Trail Theory: thru-hikes, trail magic, and the Appalachian Trail

At the beginning of 2023, my sister and I took on one of our biggest goals yet: to hike the Appalachian Trail in one go. This equals hiking 2,200 miles (further than Frodo and Bilbo did) from Georgia to Maine up and down the ridgelines of the Appalachian mountains (which, put back to back, is the same as climbing Mount Everest 16 times).

Hiking that distance is an incredible adventure. While on this journey, we passed through rain, ice, fog, smoke, heat, and more. We crossed iced over peaks in North Carolina and Tennessee, saw the first wildflowers blooming in Virginia, explored the rocky craigs of Pennsylvania, and raced the flooding in Vermont. Plus, the people we met were incredible. From their trail names to their accomplishments, it’s safe to say that the AT does not have a dull person who ever put foot on the trail.

Recently, I got to visit the Trail Theory podcast and talk about my experiences thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. Tune in to listen to our conversation, and learn about food, mental endurance, trail magic and trail names, and what it’s like to spend half a year hiking the Appalachian Trail.
